The subordinate name of a journal component such as an article
Article Subtitles. Sometimes in the past, deciding the boundary between article title and article subtitle has been confusing. Is the material after a colon a subtitle or part of the title? If the title material is displayed on three lines, are they all title or are some of them subtitle? Tagging has not always been consistently applied.
Going forward, the rules are much simpler. In the interests of web findability and searching, there will be almost no tagged subtitles in APA journals. All title-like material will be placed inside the <article-title> element. A colon in a title does not start a subtitle; the colon and the phrase after it will be wrapped into the <article-title> in the typical case.
Article subtitles will be used extensively in the AP (AMP) Awards issue (see example below).
Section Subtitles. This is an APA addition to the NLM tag set. They are rare, even within APA journals.
